Editorial Policy

Mission

SalaryByRole exists to make global compensation transparent and comparable. Our reporting must be accurate, well-sourced, and free of commercial influence on individual data points.

Data sources

We aggregate from three tiers of sources, in this priority order:

  1. Government statistics: US Bureau of Labor Statistics (OEWS), UK Office for National Statistics (ASHE), Statistics Canada, Eurostat, ABS (Australia).
  2. Cross-checked third-party datasets: Glassdoor, PayScale, LinkedIn Salary, Levels.fyi (for tech), Numbeo (for cost-of-living).
  3. User submissions via /contribute. These never override Tier 1/2 medians; they only refine ranges and add city-level granularity.

Every salary figure on a country or role page carries an inline citation when a single primary source dominates. See our methodology for aggregation formulas.

Review process

Any page that displays compensation numbers passes through this chain:

  1. Automated source freshness check (data older than 18 months is flagged).
  2. Sample-size guardrail: pages with fewer than 8 verified data points display a "Limited data" badge and are noindex until backfilled.
  3. Editorial review of any claim about "highest paying", "best country for X", or similar superlatives.
  4. Annual re-verification — every page must be refreshed at least once per year or marked stale.

User submissions

Submissions to /contributeare anonymous, moderated, and never published with personally identifying details. We deduplicate by salary band + role + country + IP hash, reject outliers (>3σ from the median), and require ≥8 verified submissions before a city-level page is published.

Authorship & expertise

Editorial pages (guides, insights, rankings) are bylined to a named author. Data pages are attributed to the SalaryByRole Research team. We do not publish AI-generated body copy on indexable pages without a named human editor reviewing it.

Independence & advertising

We may earn affiliate revenue from job boards, payroll software, or tax services linked from our content. These commercial relationships never influence which salaries we display, how we rank countries or roles, or which sources we cite.
