How to compare salaries across countries in 2026

Raw salary numbers rarely tell the full story. A $100,000 role in San Francisco buys less than a $60,000 role in Lisbon once you factor in rent, groceries, transport and tax. Our comparison tool normalizes everything to USD using current exchange rates and then layers on a purchasing-power-parity (PPP) adjustment so you can see what a salary actually means in local terms.

What the tool shows you

Nominal vs PPP-adjusted pay

Nominal salary is the dollar figure on a paycheck. PPP-adjusted salary tells you how much that money buys in local goods and services compared to the United States. Two engineers earning the same USD amount in Mumbai and New York will have very different lifestyles — PPP makes that visible. See our methodology page for the exact factors we use.
